Christopher looks back at the N-Gage through 2003
The N-Gage QD (Quaque Die, Latin for Every Day) is Nokia's second entry into the 'Gaming' category that started with the original N-Gage. While announced as the second machine, in actual fact it is much more like the N-Gage v1.1. It continues to run Symbian OS 6.1 with MIDP 1.1 support. It has not, as some thought, been updated to 7.0s and MIDP 2.0, probably for compatibility reasons.
The N-Gage QD is much more a regular phone that plays games, rather than the N-Gage's Games Machine that is also a phone. It is held as a regular phone (no more side talking), and to the joy of all games players, you can finally hot swap the MMC (i.e. change games without disassembling the machine).
Most of the multi-media features of the first N-Gage have been stripped out. You've no MP3 Player or FM Radio here. Connectivity to other machines is only through Bluetooth (there is no USB and there is no IrDA connectivity).
Programs and Games can be added either using the N-Gage only locked MMC cards (intended for rich games such as Tomb Raider and Super Monkey Ball) or into the phone's memory (or a normal MMC card) as self install programs as on other Symbian devices. Series 60 currently supports 3rd party programs written in Symbian C++, J2ME or OPL.
Note that as the software and OS is identical to the original N-Gage, there is 100% inter-operability between the two devices.
