Nokia 5320 XpressMusic: A new N-Gage-compatible phone

Published by Tzer2 at 11:39 BST, April 22nd 2008

Nokia has today announced its first non-Nseries N-Gage-compatible phone, the 5320 XpressMusic. It's a music-oriented phone with dedicated music keys, 24 hours of playback time, a dedicated audio chip for better sound quality, a 3.5mm audio jack, and a high speed USB port for quicker computer-to-phone music transfers. It's also got 3.5G HSDPA which allows multi-megabit internet connections through the mobile phone network. Perhaps best of all though, it's going to launch sim-free and unlocked for just 220 euros plus taxes, about half the price of the N81 (which has a similar specification). The launch date should be some time this Autumn.

Nokia had always said N-Gage would expand beyond Nseries models, but this is the first time they've stated a specific model. This is great news because it takes N-Gage one step closer to being a truly mass market platform. The 5320's very low launch price means a lot more people will be able to buy an N-Gage-compatible device, and the one thing any gaming platform needs is as large a userbase as possible.

UPDATE: The 5320 DOES have two gaming buttons! Rafe over on All About Symbian has been taking some pictures of a real life 5320 today at Nokia's publicity event. You can see the full photo gallery over on AAS, but the picture that interests us the most is this one illustrating both of the gaming buttons. The top button is also one of the music playback keys, which might look awkward but is actually in effect a shoulder button, so it should be fairly comfortable to use.

UPDATE 2: Apparently the 5320 also has special grips at the top and bottom of the back to make it more comfortable to hold in horizontal mode. You can see one of the grips in the publicity photo below, the other grip is hidden in the shadow at the bottom.

...because it's better than no buttons at all, which is what most phones have above the screen? :-)

To be fair, most of the games released so far only use one of the N81's buttons, Creatures Of The Deep for example, and even COTD makes gaming button use optional as you can use the d-pad button instead.

It may be that Nokia's experimenting with what is actually needed for controlling phone games. Personally I think the d-pad on its own could be enough, though it's more comfortable to hold the phone horizontally while playing.

However, if one button isn't enough there's always the upcoming N96 which has an N81-style slide-out panel for gaming and multimedia.

Having said all that, what worries me more is the keypad getting in the way of the d-pad when you're using it in horizontal mode.

The N81's keypad slides out of the way in horizontal mode so it's pretty comfortable to hold, but the 5320's keypad is fixed.

It probably won't be a terrible problem, but it's worth bearing in mind.

Actually... there ARE two buttons on the 5320, see the updated article for a photo of both of them! :-)
