All About N-Gage - Next Generation Ready

And your most-used phone on N-Gage is...

Published by Tzer2 at 16:24 BST, May 17th 2008

We've now closed the poll on which phone is the most popular for use with N-Gage games, and the results are in. Click on the headline of this news story to see them...

Which phone are you currently using to access N-Gage?

Nokia N95 - 131 votes (30.75%)

Nokia N95 8GB - 96 votes (22.54%)

I'm still waiting for N-Gage to become compatible with my phone - 96 votes (22.54%)

Nokia N82 - 74 votes (17.37%)

Nokia N81 8GB - 16 votes (3.76%)

Nokia N81 - 13 votes (3.05%)

This result is hardly a surprise as the N95 came top of our pre-launch poll on which model people were most likely to use. Perhaps the most surprising result is how small the vote was for the N81 and N81 8GB, with less than seven perecent of the votes between them. It seems that the N81 and its variant haven't gone down very well with All About N-Gage's readership. The more recently launched N82 on the other hand is doing very well.

And of course there's that very interesting large number of votes for people who would play N-Gage but their phone isn't compatible yet. We didn't ask which models people had, but in a previous poll held in February on which phones should join the platform, the most popular models nominated by our readers were the E90 and 6120/6121.

As always it should be mentioned that these results aren't scientific, those who took part chose to take part. This was not an active survey of public opinion, but more a bit of fun.

It's a typo. It's actually N95 8GB.
By the way, regarding the compatibility with phones, I think those who voted as their phones are not compatible with N-Gage yet, are not necessarily the same as those who voted similarly in the last poll. Remember, in the earlier situation, N73, N93 and N93i owners voted for their respective handsets, while, in this poll, they have voted differently since they have compatibility issues. Thus the people without compatibility should have been more in number. Looks like Nokia has done well among AAN readers, more of those have bought N95, its 8 GB variant, and N82.

Ooops!

Yes, that should read N95 8GB.

I think you're right Sandy that the people waiting for compatibility in this poll would also include many people with N73s and N93s.

Regarding the popularity of the N95, I think it's because the N81 is too expensive for what it is. The N81 8GB is almost the same price as the N95, but the N95 is better in almost every way (though some have said the N81's audio quality is much higher). The N95 has GPS, a 3D chip, TV Out, 5mp camera, VGA camcorder, accelerometer, and it even has gaming keys, because you can use the multimedia buttons in N-Gage games in horizontal mode.

Yeah I agree with you krisse regarding N81. What I think, is, N81 is an old model, having a delayed release. Its specs were almost outdated from day one of its announcement. And the price is a big issue behind its lower sales. One thing I want to clarify, do the multimedia buttons on N95 Classic work as gaming keys? Many of the N-Gage forum posts and other sources say no, while some other sources say it's possible. Are they actually 'usable'?

I can categorically say that they 100% work as gaming keys when playing N-Gage games, they're exactly like using the N81's gaming keys. The N95 does everything the N81 does as far as N-Gage games are concerned. The games even play with the multimedia keys on the right by default, which is the same default layout as the N81 (though you can flip it round if you prefer, for example if you're left-handed).

I think the posts about the N95's keys not working were because they don't work as gaming keys with non-N-Gage games, but the N81's gaming keys don't work with non-N-Gage games either. Another source of confusion may have been the very early demos released last year on the "discover n-gage" application, they may not have used the N95's multimedia keys. However, the actual 2008 release versions do use the keys.

Thanks for the clarification krisse.

I belive even till the end of the year ,even after the advent of reset gen. the N95 will still be held one of the most prefer S60v3 -Ngage combo phone.
Well, there's the N96 , but 'price' will stop it from completely walking over its other siblings.

The N95 was a very popular model anyway. I should think the majority of N-Gage users are choosing their phone as a phone first, so the popularity of a device for N-Gage depends mostly on its popularity as a phone.

In terms of popular models in the future, maybe the most interesting model is the 5320 XpressMusic. It's going to cost just 220 euros plus taxes at launch, so by Christmas it might be priced below 200 euros. At that level it could reach a much wider audience than any Nseries device, and I'm sure it won't be the only cheap N-Gage device we see in 2008.
