All About N-Gage - Next Generation Ready

Reserve your Nokia Account name now

Published by Tzer2 at 1:36 BST, July 13th 2008

This might not sound like it's connected to N-Gage, but bear with us because it is. There's now something called Nokia Account which provides easier access to Nokia's online services. At the moment it's just used by a few of the services, but it should eventually expand to cover them all, and that would probably include N-Gage Arena. For that reason N-Gagers ought to register a Nokia Account username now, to make sure they get the one they want.

If you're wondering why Nokia Account has a separate membership database to N-Gage Arena, it's a long story. In the meantime, here's that address again:

http://account.nokia.com/

You don't need to provide anything except a username, a password and a working e-mail address.

Now, here's the long story...

Nokia is changing. Instead of just making phones, it's now starting to develop software and online services such as maps, music, file sharing etc. Most of these services started out life as separate companies which Nokia bought, so all of them have separate membership systems, and you have to register with each service separately in order to use them.

Having to give several different usernames to access all of Nokia's services is a bit annoying of course, so they're trying to provide a single membership system to allow access to all services from a single account. That's what Nokia Account is, the beginnings of a single system.

As an umbrella brand name for all these services, Nokia is using the word "Ovi" (which is Finnish for "door"). The idea seems to be that eventually you can access all the services from the ovi.com website, and if you go there now you'll see that N-Gage is one of the Ovi-branded services.

Although Nokia Account doesn't work with N-Gage yet, at some point Nokia will probably let you log in to N-Gage Arena using Nokia Account, which could mean the end of the old player name system. In order to make sure you can keep your player name after the switchover, it might be wise to register it now on Nokia Account.

Any more info?

If you're interested in the services currently available on Ovi, pop on over to the official Ovi website. The current selection includes Nokia Maps, Nokia Music Store, Ovi Share, Ovi Files and of course N-Gage. Other services including synchronisation and instant messaging are coming soon, and there is probably other unannounced stuff in the pipeline too (we'd guess webmail and a video store, but that's just speculation).

In fact you can already try out the beta version of Nokia's IM application on the Nokia Beta Labs site. It works on all N-Gage-compatible phones (and a lot more besides), with its main attraction being that it lets you tell your friends where you are using the Nokia Maps application. The IM app is one of the few services that currently uses the Nokia Account system, incidentally.

Just to emphasise again, you can't use the Nokia Account username on N-Gage right now, but you will be able to in the future, so that's why it's worth registering it now.

I signed up
i selected the Verify email got that link o.k sent to account
but i'm not getting a text after clicking to verify My phone number as contact option.
clicked it twice still no verification TEXT message.

Did you guy's get verify text ?

BTW what sites can i use the Id i created on so far ?
krisse
You don't need to do the phone if you've already done e-mail confirmation, it just says e-mail OR phone number.

I think they've done it that way because some people are registering for Nokia Account by mobile, so for them a text may be easier than an e-mail.

At the moment the only proper service that uses Nokia Account is Nokia Chat:

http://www.nokia.com/betalabs/chat

However, eventually all of Nokia's services (presumably including N-Gage) will use Nokia Account which is why it's worth getting in early now to get your favourite username. We don't know when the big switchover will be, but when it happens this will be the account system they use.

i know you can just verify one or the other but getting both verified is easier as they will contact u by phone also if there is any info they sent out which is better for me when working.
I tried verifying Phone number before Email it did'nt work no Text,
it probably as to be done via phone browser thats why no text was ever sent.

Did you put your phone number in its international form, with the + and your country code? And did you make sure the first 0 was removed from the actual number?

For example if there was a british number 012345678, its international form would be +4412345678

You can still your phone number to the profile even without verifying through it. If you log in at account.nokia.com and then click on "my info", there's a section for your phone number.
ccraig
yes i did all that.
i know you can still put a phone number ,but unless you verify phone number you wont be contacted with news & info via that method.
go to edit profile it tells you "you still have unverified contact methods" then scroll down to Email or phone number and the option to verify is there on which ever ones are unverified .

I think your best bet is to wait until Nokia Accounts is used with a wider range of services, then try the verification again. They're not likely to send you any information until then anyway.

I have several Nokia related accounts also, so this is a long time overdue, however, the one account I do not have is the "My Nokia". I just tried to create a new account, but the site is down for maintenance work.

Thanks for the heads up on registering. I registered my name even though I dont even own a compatible phone yet.
Have a bit of confusion though. What services apart from N-gage & IM will use the nokia account ?
Rafe
It will likely be used by other Nokia online services. I imagine eventually any Nokia service will look to use these. (e.g. Ovi services like Share Online or Nokia Maps)

I eventually registered, its back up and running now.

According to the Nokia Account help page, all of them!

Here's what they say:

"Nokia Account is your key to the growing collection of Nokia services. Soon you no longer need to keep track of multiple user IDs and passwords: your Nokia Account provides you with access to all the Nokia services."
