All About N-Gage - Next Generation Ready

...all you can do is step back in time

Published by Tzer2 at 15:43 BST, July 20th 2008

Back in the days when E3 used to be a massive event, Nokia had a huge N-Gage stall there every year, but since the expo was downsized they've given it a miss. However, you can still access Nokia's very last N-Gage E3 2006 website including very very early screenshots and videos of many games that have since been released (and generally look much better now). There are also one or two titles that never made it, including Habbo Islands with its excellent trailer. Visit it before they take it down folks!

Just in case they take it down after this story, here are some screenshots of the site:

Waaaaaaaaaay back in early 2006 (heck, that's over two years ago now!) we'd heard some strong rumours about an Nseries device oriented around gaming.

Looking at the prominence of the N93 in those photos, maybe that's what the N93 was originally intended to be: an excellent gaming device?

Speaking personally, the N93 has certainly got the best layout for gaming of any phone I've used, and the d-pad is absolutely excellent.

The N93 was also the first Nokia phone to include a graphics acceleration chip, which is another very pro-gaming feature, and it was the first device to include a demo of a next gen N-Gage game, System Rush Evolution.

AND... the new N-Gage platform was originally going to launch in 2006, which would have been perfect timing for the release of the N93 (it was announced in late April 2006, just a few weeks before E3).

Was the N93 originally meant to be the new N-Gage platform's flagship device? Was this abandoned because the platform itself was delayed until 2007?

What we do know is that this is what happened to the N81. It was meant to spearhead the new N-Gage platform, and was heavily advertised as such with dedicated gaming keys above the screen, but it had to be launched without N-Gage because the platform was delayed again to 2008.

It's a shame they didn't do a site like this about the Go Play event, it might have been fun...

I remember that website also, E3 was great back then, mind you I think this years E3 was at least an improvement over last years(the downscale was a right old shock!).

As for NGage, aren't they sponsering/headlining the Leipzig Games Convention this year(20-24th August)? Guess that will be the place for them in 2008:icon14:

N-Gage are sponsoring quite a few events this year as I recall, though Leipzig is by far the biggest. But I doubt they'll ever do one of these elaborate live websites again though... :-(
